IPO has announced that the UK has signed the WIPO Treaty on the Protection of Audiovisual Performances (Beijing Treaty).

The BCC welcomes the statement by Lord Younger, Minister for IP, which followed the signing, that:-

“The treaty recognises the value of creative artists whose performances we enjoy in our cinema, at the theatre and on television. This treaty adds to the measures that the Government is pursuing in creating the right environment for a stronger creative industry sector in the UK.”

The BCC’s representative at the Beijing Diplomatic Conference, Andrew Yeates, who is also Legal Consultant to British Equity Collecting Society said:-

“One year on from the successful conclusion of the Beijing Diplomatic Conference, it is helpful that the UK has now signed the Treaty. This is another step towards ensuring that support for the rights of audio-visual performers can be properly recognised at international level within an increasingly digital world. BECS will continue to encourage ratification of the Treaty by all EU member states as soon as possible”.
