“The British Copyright Council welcomes the Government’s focus on understanding how organisations access and use data in the development and deployment of AI and other data-intensive technologies. As the representative body for the UK’s copyright community, our members have extensive experience of licensing, managing and governing the use of valuable data and content across a wide range of sectors.

While this Call for Evidence does not directly relate to copyright, in the context of AI, copyright works such as photographs, film, performance and written content often contain personal information and, as such, copyright and data protection are interlinked. Our experience demonstrates that effective data governance depends upon clear legal frameworks governing access to data. These legal frameworks should be viewed as complementary rather than competing. Together they create the trust and legal certainty necessary for responsible innovation.”
