26th WIPO-BCC training course, London, 3–14 September 2018
Copyright specialists from around the world are arriving in London on 3 September 2018 for two weeks of advanced training delivered by more than 50 UK and international copyright experts.
The 26th Advanced Training Course on Copyright and Related Rights is organised jointly by the British Copyright Council (BCC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in cooperation with the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) at Queen Mary University of London and the UK’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO).
Confirmed delegates to the course, which runs from 3 – 14 September, include those from Bangladesh, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Malaysia, Nigeria, Paraguay, Romania and Trinidad & Tobago — many of them representatives of their governments’ copyright offices or rightsholder organisations.
Hosted at the CCLS in central London, with visits to PRS for Music and PPL, this course provides a thorough overview of the copyright landscape from a UK perspective and in an international context. New for 2018 will be an exploration of artificial intelligence and its implications for copyright.
Among the speakers are Michele Woods, director of WIPO’s Copyright Law Division and secretary of its Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights, Dr Ros Lynch, director of Copyright and IP Enforcement at the IPO, and renowned high court judge Sir Richard Arnold.
Other expert contributors come from Queen Mary University and a range of rights-related organisations, including many British Copyright Council members, creators, academics and legal professionals. They will cover topics from national and international law, collective rights management and the interests of authors, publishers, broadcasters, artists and performers, to copyright enforcement, education and issues for developing countries. The British Library and the Daisy Consortium, an international organisation that works to support accessible publishing and reading services for people with disabilities, will also be addressing the participants.
One of the highlights of the social programme will be a dinner at Tate Britain with guest speaker Lord Clement-Jones CBE. The Liberal Democrat peer is noted for his expertise and commitment to the creative industries and IP, and is also Chair of Council at Queen Mary University of London.
In 2018, the course is supported by the Authors Licensing & Collecting Society, the BBC, the British Equity Collecting Society, the Educational Recording Agency, the Motion Picture Association, the Musicians’ Union, PPL, the Publishers Licensing Services and PRS for Music. The IPO also makes a substantial contribution.
