On 13 May, BCC members joined a reception in Parliament in support of the Make it Fair campaign, sponsored by James Frith MP.

The event, hosted jointly by the British Copyright Council, the Alliance for IP and the News Media Association, brought together representatives from across the creative, news and media sectors and Parliamentarians to urge the Government to ensure that UK creators can secure proper financial reward from AI firms to ensure a sustainable future for the creative and news sectors.

Attendees at the event included:

  • James Frith MP
  • Dame Caroline Dinenage DBE MP
  • Pete Wishart MP
  • Lord Clement-Jones
  • Baroness Bowles
  • Lord Brennan
  • Baroness Hughes
  • Jeff Smith MP
  • Steve Race MP
  • Lord Freyberg
  • Samantha Niblett MP
  • Tulip Siddiq MP
  • Sally Jameson MP

Plus:

  • Mark Sellam, News UK (Tech Correspondent at The Times)
  • Andy Jehring, DMG Media (General Reporter at The Daily Mail, covering copyright)

The event called on the Government to confirm that existing copyright law is retained and applied to AI firms as part of the Government’s response to the AI and Copyright consultation expected in the coming weeks. In addition, attendees reinstated the campaign call for transparency requirements to be introduced to allow creators to understand when and where their content is used, allowing creators to hold AI firms to account for copyright theft.

The BCC is very grateful to everyone who attended, the NMA and the Alliance for IP for their support and to our guest speakers James Frith MP and Caroline Dinenage MP.
