British Copyright Council - supporting creativity

© Martin Beckett, 2004

The BCC was founded in 1965 and incorporated in 2007. It is a national consultative and advisory body representing those who create, hold interests in or manage rights in literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, films, sound recordings, broadcasts and other material in which there are rights of copyright or related rights; and those who perform such works.

As a liaison committee and pressure group for change in copyright law at UK, European and international level, the BCC provides its members with a forum for the discussion of copyright matters.

BCC/WIPO Training Course

The BCC/WIPO Intermediate level Training Course in Copyright and Related Rights is intended mainly for government officials from developing countries. This two week training course is organised by the British Copyright Council on behalf of the WIPO Worldwide Academy and held in association with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office. The 2010 Course will be the eighteenth organised by the BCC.

EU Intellectual Property Law

EU Intellectual Property Law

The latest book by the BCC's Working Group Secretary, Trevor Cook, has just been published. IP Kat has this to say about Trevor: "He identifies relevant issues and explains them cleanly and crisply, in what seems to this reviewer to be the smallest number of words in which it is possible to do without sacrificing good style on the altar of brevity. Letting the law tell its own story, he has provided an extremely useful means of approaching the subject"

Own-it at Illumini: shedding light on copyright

Own-it at Illumini: shedding light on copyright

As part of Illumini Event 2010, Own-it is organising a seminar on copyright for artists which will be held at Shoreditch Town Hall on 15 September at 4pm.

The event will be an introduction to law for artists whose artistic practices are outside the more traditional art forms, such as conceptual, appropriation or installation art. Do installations attract copyright? How can you protect your work from being copied or stolen even if it's just an idea to be executed by others? How can you ensure it is properly displayed and you are credited? What do you need to look out for in contracts? Do you need permission to display or perform your work?

Problems Tracing Copyright Owners?

You’ve tried all the obvious routes for tracing a copyright owner, their family, their last known publisher or agent, and you’ve also tried the relevant professional bodies or collecting societies and still drawn a blank?

Try WATCH at www.watch-file.com for a database of copyright contacts for writers, artists and prominent figures in other creative fields or FOB at www.fob-file.com, a similar site for publishers, literary agents and other firms now out of business. Both sites are operated by the University of Reading and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas.
